The Flourish-ED Framework for Primary Education

Primary school is where a child forms their earliest sense of themselves as a learner — whether they are clever enough, whether they belong, whether school is a place where they can be fully themselves. Flourish-ED is a complete framework for human flourishment in primary schools: a research-grounded model that reorientates a school around the whole child, without ever trading away the standards a primary is held to.

At its heart are five pillars — Identity, Character, Empowerment, Intellect and Purpose — that name what flourishing consists of for children and for the adults who teach them. In the primary context they speak to the questions childhood asks most deeply: Do I belong here? Am I capable? Is my curiosity welcome? Who am I becoming? The pillars are realised through nine principles describing how the work is done, in pursuit of six goals — from restoring belonging and a love of learning to building the firm foundations of academic success.

Unlike a wellbeing programme bolted onto a busy curriculum, Flourish-ED is a coherent philosophy made practical. It is delivered as a diagnostic–development–evaluation cycle: we make flourishing visible through age-appropriate diagnostics, develop leaders and teachers through programmes and coaching, and evidence the change through data that speaks to belonging, behaviour, engagement and attainment together — in genuine partnership with families.

Grounded in Aristotle, Sen, Nussbaum and the OECD, and forged in real classrooms rather than a boardroom, it rests on a conviction the evidence confirms: children who feel they belong, and know they are more than a score, become confident, capable learners who achieve. The foundations we build now hold up everything that follows.
